Renewed Federal Investment Strengthens Canada’s National Suicide Crisis Response

On January 16, 2026 the Government of Canada announced renewed funding of up to $120.2 million over two years to support the continued operation of the 9-8-8: Suicide Crisis Helpline, ensuring Canadians can access suicide prevention support when they need it most. Launched nationally in 2023, 9-8-8 provides 24/7, bilingual, trauma-informed and culturally appropriate crisis support by phone or text for individuals experiencing suicidal distress or those concerned about someone else.

The helpline will continue to be coordinated and operated by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, working with a national network of 37 partners that includes local crisis lines, provincial mental health services, and organisations such as Kids Help Phone and Hope for Wellness. Since its launch, 9-8-8 has responded to more than 800,000 calls and texts, reinforcing its role as a critical component of Canada’s suicide prevention and mental health support system.

The renewed investment builds on earlier federal funding announced in 2023 and reflects ongoing government commitment to mental health, crisis response capacity, and equitable access to timely support across the country, particularly in moments of acute distress.
