North Star Initiative: Positioning Canada as a Global Leader in Mental Health Research

The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) is working to make Canada a world destination for brain and mental health research through its North Star Initiative.

As the country’s largest mental health teaching hospital, CAMH is advancing discoveries across neuroscience, brain imaging, genomics, AI, and other fields that are shaping the future of care. A major milestone will be the opening of the Temerty Discovery Centre in 2027—a 385,000-square-foot hub in Toronto designed to bring researchers together, accelerate breakthroughs, and improve patient outcomes.

The initiative also connects CAMH researchers with Toronto’s wider research ecosystem, including the University of Toronto, University Health Network, and the Toronto Academic Health Science Network. These collaborations ensure discoveries can move quickly from the lab to real-world impact.
