OpenAI has announced ChatGPT Health, a new dedicated experience within ChatGPT intended to support people in understanding and navigating their health and wellness by securely combining personal health information with AI-assisted responses. The development reflects the growing use of ChatGPT for health-related questions, with more than 230 million people globally engaging with health and wellness topics on the platform each week.
ChatGPT Health is positioned as a supportive, informational tool, rather than a substitute for clinical care. It is not designed to diagnose or treat medical conditions, but to help users prepare for appointments, interpret information, and better understand patterns in their health data alongside clinician-led care.
Bringing health information into one place
Health information is often dispersed across multiple systems and apps, making it difficult for individuals to see a coherent picture. ChatGPT Health allows users to securely connect medical records and selected wellness apps so that conversations can be informed by personal health context. Supported integrations include medical records (through approved partners), Apple Health, and wellness platforms such as MyFitnessPal and Function, enabling users to explore trends, understand test results, and organise questions for healthcare visits.
Access is being introduced gradually via a waitlist, starting with a limited group of users on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans outside the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Some medical record integrations and apps are currently limited to the United States, and Apple Health integration requires iOS.
Privacy, security, and data controls
Given the sensitivity of health data, ChatGPT Health operates as a separate space within ChatGPT, with additional privacy and security protections. Health conversations, files, and connected apps are isolated from other chats, use enhanced encryption, and maintain separate memories. Health conversations are not used to train OpenAI’s foundation models, and users can review, delete, or disconnect their health data at any time.
Clinician-informed design and evaluation
The health experience has been developed with input from physicians across multiple countries and specialties. This collaboration has informed how health information is presented, when users are encouraged to seek professional care, and how responses prioritise safety and clarity. Performance is assessed using HealthBench, a clinician-informed evaluation framework designed to reflect real-world standards of care and communication rather than exam-style accuracy alone.
Supporting informed engagement with care
ChatGPT Health aims to support people in engaging more actively with their health by improving understanding, organisation, and preparation, while reinforcing that medical decision-making and treatment remain the role of qualified healthcare professionals.
