Anil Thaplial, Executive Director of the eMental Health International Collaborative (eMHIC), recently had the privilege of embarking on an eye-opening journey through Wenzhou & Shanghai in China and Taichung in Taiwan.
What he discovered were profound commitments to revolutionizing mental health care, highlighting a future where digital innovation and compassionate human connection go hand-in-hand to reshape well-being globally.

Digital Mental Health’s Global Ascent
Anil’s journey strongly reinforced that advancing global mental health through widespread adoption of digital solutions is crucial for ensuring timely access to care for all populations.
China’s Digital Evolution: A Holistic Path to Mental Wellness
In China, Anil witnessed a truly inspiring dedication to transforming mental health services. His time there included engaging with top universities and hospitals, and he had the honor of delivering a talk at Wenzhou Hospital in Zhejiang Province. His presentation, “Getting It Right by Design in Mental Health: Embracing the Inevitable Digital Transformation for Timely Access and Global Impact on Global Mental Health,” resonated deeply with 250 passionate mental health professionals. Anil was struck by how real-time AI translation effortlessly bridged any language gaps, creating a tangible sense of connection where everyone shared a common goal: getting it right for the end user.
"I saw clear evidence of a collective commitment and hunger for innovation and global collaboration to improve access."
What stood out most was the thoughtful integration of digital mental health tools into a holistic, “Whole Person” approach – blending traditional psychological support, psychosocial care, art therapy, and even traditional Chinese medicine.
It was a disciplined method, designed to ensure the right solutions from the very beginning. As a testament to his impact, Anil was honored with three key appointments, including International Digital Mental Health Advisor at The Affiliated Kangning Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University.

Taiwan: A Hub of Innovation and Compassionate Care
Anil’s journey then led him to Taiwan, a nation renowned for its technological leadership and deeply ingrained sense of humanity.
He was warmly hosted by Dr. Yuan-Hwa Chou, Deputy Superintendent of Taichung Veterans General Hospital (TCVGH), an institution that Newsweek proudly named one of the “World’s Best Smart Hospitals.”
During his visit, Anil delivered two impactful lectures. The first, for the Department of Psychiatry staff at TCVGH, explored “Advancing Mental Health Care: Harnessing Digital Technologies for Timely Access and Global Perspectives,” prompting insightful and thought-provoking questions from the engaged attendees.
The second lecture, at the College of Life Sciences at National Chung Hsin University, focused broadly on digital mental health. A particularly insightful question during the Q&A touched on the potential harms of social media, giving Anil the opportunity to cite Dr. Amy Green’s 2024 report: A Double-Edged Sword: How Diverse Communities of Young People Think About the Multifaceted Relationship Between Social Media and Mental Health.
This report, he explained, highlighted the critical need to “consider the diverse experiences of young people” and to “ensure that we do not inadvertently remove access to crucial positive benefits.
Taiwan’s unique blend of resilience, optimism, and an unwavering focus on human connection left an unforgettable impression on Anil. He recalled observing a family’s tender care for their elderly great-grandfather during a restaurant outing, a scene that highlighted the profound humanity and care and deep respect for elders, emblematic of a society that cherishes every generation.
This experience profoundly strengthened his conviction that innovation, when intrinsically linked with genuine humanity, holds immense promise for the future of mental health.
In a significant collaborative gesture, Anil was also honored to be invited as an Advisor at the Human Brain Research Center at TCVGH, further solidifying Taiwan’s pivotal role in shaping the future of digital mental health. “The future of mental health is global, digital, human-centered—and full of promise.” observed Anil.
"Leaving Taiwan today is an emotional experience, as it’s a place filled with humanity and resilience. Here, the word 'impossible' seems absent from the vocabulary where everyone is creative, practical, and solution-focused. Their combination of innovation, humanity, and unwavering positivity truly offers hope for us all. There is so much for each one of us to learn from each other."
