Dr Piers Gooding is an Associate Professor at La Trobe University’s Law School in Melbourne, Australia.
His work focuses on legal issues concerning disability and health, including in international human rights law. Prior to joining La Trobe University, Piers was a Senior Research Fellow at Melbourne Law School (2015–2023) and a Research Fellow at the Centre for Disability Law and Policy at the University of Galway in Ireland (2014–2015).
Piers has a background in law and the humanities, with degrees from the University of Melbourne (BA, First Class Honours in History and Cultural Studies) and Monash University (PhD in Law). He has been published in journals such as the International Journal of Law in Context, Human Rights Law Review, New Criminal Law Review, Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica, and the Health Sociology Review. He occasionally writes for the media, with articles in Slate, The Irish Times, and The Big Issue, and has been featured in publications including The Guardian, MIT Technology Review, and the Sydney Morning Herald.
He has collaborated with the UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Physical and Mental Health, and the World Psychiatric Association.
