Initiative Overview

The Current Gap

Geography, isolation, stigma, limited access to services, and barriers to traditional or clinical supports can leave people without accessible, meaningful connection when they need it. Many people may not require clinical intervention or be ready to engage with formal services, but can benefit from talking with someone who understands through lived experience.

The Warmline is part of a broader, lived-experience-led peer-support organization. Lifewise also offers virtual and in-person one-to-one support, peer support groups, and specialized programs for populations including first responders and perinatal individuals. This broader continuum allows people to access peer support in ways that reflect their needs and preferences.

Our Solution

The Lifewise Warmline provides free, confidential, low-barrier telephone peer support, connecting people aged 16+ with trained Peer Supporters who draw on their own lived experience to offer connection, understanding, hope, and support. No diagnosis, referral, appointment, or crisis is required to access the service.

Key Learnings

Key challenges include reaching people across a geographically dispersed province, reducing stigma and barriers to accessing support, and ensuring peer support is recognized as a professional and valuable service. Sustaining the Warmline is also an ongoing challenge, as the service is currently largely government-funded. Maintaining capacity while preserving the authenticity and integrity of lived-experience-led peer support remains essential.
Lived experience must be central to the design, delivery, and culture of peer support, not simply an additional perspective. Peer Supporters need meaningful training, professional recognition, appropriate structures, and sustainable investment to do this work effectively. Low-barrier access is equally important: people should be able to seek connection and support without having to navigate clinical systems or prove they need help.
Lifewise has participated in numerous national and international conferences and presentations, sharing expertise and lived-experience perspectives on peer support, mental health, and substance use health. These opportunities support knowledge exchange, allow Lifewise to contribute to evolving peer-support models, and strengthen connections with organizations and practitioners working to advance accessible, person-centered support.

Looking Ahead

Lifewise plans to expand access to peer support through text-based support and potentially live chat, increasing choice and accessibility while retaining the lived-experience peer model. Future development will focus on secure technology, sustainable service capacity, and strengthening the ways people can connect with trained Peer Supporters across Newfoundland and Labrador.
Lifewise welcomes opportunities for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and shared learning with organizations advancing peer and lived-experience support. Areas of interest include digital peer-support innovation, service evaluation, workforce development, and approaches that strengthen the recognition and integration of peer support within mental health and substance use health systems.
