Families and close friends impacted by those using alcohol and/or other drugs need evidence-based, culturally appropriate services in their own right, irrespective of where the focal person is on their journey. The 5-Step programme, developed over 20 years ago at the University of Birmingham, UK, and designed with excellent data collection capabilities, is used in several countries around the world.
The programme allows families to build coping and resilience for a journey they did not choose to be on. It has proved an excellent programme to deliver via Telehealth throughout New Zealand
Family Drug Support Aotearoa New Zealand provides high-quality, evidence-based, culturally appropriate services to family members impacted by a relative or close friend’s alcohol and / or other drug use. These services are tailored to the needs of those seeking help irrespective of where the focal person with the alcohol and /or other drug use is on their journey.
Training in working with Impacted Families in their own right is provided to clinical level staff. An E-learning programme has also been developed for Peer Support/Lived Experience Support Worker level staff, working in services throughout New Zealand, to develop skills in working with families.
