The 2024 recipient of the Country Leadership Award for New Zealand is Headstrong.

From humble beginnings, Headstrong has transformed from a research project into a dynamic and impactful tool, making significant strides in mental health support for young people.

All too often, promising developments are confined to academic research or developed by commercial entities. However, Headstrong has defied this trend by bringing their vision to life. It has moved from conception to national implementation in four years, demonstrating rapid adaptation and a commitment to sustained relevance and excellence.

What began as a research-based intervention within a university setting quickly evolved into a national digital mental health app. The team operated like a startup, integrating medical expertise with cutting-edge technology and maintaining a dynamic approach through strategic partnerships. Their agile methodology and commitment to user engagement were critical to their success.

Headstrong’s impact is remarkable. Since its launch in July 2022, the app has reached over 5,000 individuals across New Zealand, with a growing number of users engaging with its diverse offerings. Notably, 25% of users are Māori, reflecting the app’s cultural sensitivity and dedication to addressing disparities in mental health care.

The app has also earned recognition for its design excellence, winning two design awards in 2023, and the positive feedback from users and professionals is a testament to its effectiveness and impact.

Key achievements include developing culturally tailored content to support Māori youth using indigenous health models. This approach not only respects but also integrates the cultural context of New Zealand into mental health care.

Headstrong has thrived in a field where many digital interventions struggle with practical implementation and user adoption. Its continuous optimization and dedication to user needs have set a new benchmark for digital mental health tools.

Congratulations to the Team behind Headstrong!
