Ember Korowai Takitini, a proud Strategic Partner member of eMHIC, is delighted to confirm that their Group CEO, Darryl Bishop has been appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) in recognition of his exceptional contributions to mental health.
For over 25 years, Darryl has been a driving force in mental health and addiction reform in New Zealand, playing a key role in shaping initiatives that have had both national and international impact. His leadership was instrumental in the Ministry of Health’s Like Minds, Like Mine programme from 2006 to 2010—one of the world’s first large-scale efforts to combat the stigma surrounding mental distress.
Ember Group Chair, Derek Wright, expressed his pride at Darryl’s recognition:
“I am delighted that Darryl has been recognised for his tireless service to mental health and his passion for improving the lives of others. This honour reflects not just his personal dedication, but also the collective success of Ember’s incredible staff under his leadership.”
Darryl’s work has not only left a lasting impact in New Zealand but has also influenced mental health practices internationally. He has contributed his knowledge and governance skills to the Canadian Mental Health Commission, the Newfoundland and Labrador government, as well as various programs across Australia and Europe.
In New Zealand, Darryl has held leadership roles in both NGO and Government organisations, helping design, develop, and deliver mental health services that ensure people receive the support they need when it matters most. He also co-chairs the Northern Navigate NGO collective and holds several board and advisory positions within the mental health and addiction sectors.
This award particularly acknowledges Darryl’s dedication to elevating the voices of those with lived experience in the design of mental health systems and addressing the specific mental health needs of young people. His advocacy for lived experience in the co-design of mental health systems and his focus on supporting young people’s mental health needs have been key pillars of his career.
Darryl shared his gratitude, stating
“I’m deeply honoured to receive this recognition—not only as a reflection of my own work, but also as a tribute to the incredible people and teams I have the privilege of working with every day in the mental health and addictions sector.”
eMHIC and the broader international mental health community extend their heartfelt congratulations to Darryl for this well-deserved recognition.
