eMHIC Webinar: The Role of AI in Mental Health – Potential Solution for Wicked Problems?

Virtual Event Virtual Event

February 17 @ 11:00 am 12:30 pm NZDT

Artificial Intelligence or AI, often used interchangeably with machine learning, is a prominent part of what is new, exciting, confusing – and for some, including fans of the Terminator series of horror movies, a little scary. The power of AI for the Public Good is, however, immense and it may offer solutions for some of what Rittel and Webber originally referred to as Wicked Problems.

To remind you, Wikipedia describes a Wicked Problem as one “that is difficult or impossible to resolve because of incomplete, contradictory, and changing requirements that are often difficult to recognize”. This is familiar territory to planners and policy makers that are trying to run a health system. In the domain of mental health, with inadequate outcome measures and diagnostic complexity Wicked Problems are all too familiar.

With increasing recognition of the need for high performance electronic health record systems, more health leaders are recognising that incorporation of predictive analytics (AI and machine learning) is not simply desirable – it is a necessity – but they remain unsure of next steps. Many decision makers in this domain have neither knowledge of, nor training in even the basics of, this new analytical domain of AI.  They are struggling to “know what they don’t know”.

In the domain of mental health there is huge growth in technology development and increasing expertise is being brought forward to develop solutions.

In this inaugural eMHIC Special Interest Group webinar “The Role of AI in Mental Health “, experts from Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the USA will share their perspectives on:

  1. Who and what does it take to implement AI technology in mental health care –  how can we achieve this?
  2. Potential gains for positive treatment outcomes following implementation of AI technology in mental health care.
  3. How AI can be used to increase access to remote mental health care – including use of virtual assistants to complement therapy?
  4. AI and health economics from a diverse client satisfaction and a health care cost perspective in managing mental health challenges – how we achieve cultural change to succeed?
