Recently, our Executive Director, Anil Thapliyal, eMHIC Board Chair Michel Rodrigue and Global Leadership Council Member Dr Andrew Greenshaw had a truly insightful meeting with Canadian Senator Stan Kutcher, a highly respected Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at Dalhousie University. Their discussion centered around the crucial role of Mental Health Literacy in Canada’s national mental health strategy. Stan is incredibly passionate about its inclusion, recognizing that it holds the key to achieving Canada’s desired mental health outcomes.

Adding to the excitement, Anil also had the opportunity to connect with Eric Bélair, Associate Assistant Deputy Minister at Health Canada, and the remarkable Dr. Kim Corace and her team from the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre (ROMHC). Together, they delved into the world of digital mental health implementation, exploring innovative initiatives happening at a population level. It was a meeting that truly expanded horizons.

To name just a few success stories that have emerged on this journey, the Substance Use and Concurrent Disorders (SUCD) Program, Rapid Access Addiction Medicine (RAAM) Clinics, Digital Front Door patient engagement platform, the AccessMHA service directory, and the Ontario Structured Psychotherapy (OSP) Program are shining examples of effective digital mental health implementation. These initiatives are making a tangible difference in people’s lives.

Of course, challenges persist in the mental health sector, but we find hope in the dedication and passion of individuals like Stan, Eric, and Kim. They bring unique perspectives and innovative solutions to the table, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. The conversations held with the Canadian Senate, Health Canada, and ROMHC have been truly inspiring, fostering a very real sense of optimism for the future.
