Dr Judith Kuriansky

Judy Kuriansky, Ph.D., is an internationally known clinical psychologist, professor, author, humanitarian, sought-after speaker, philanthropist, and an exemplary of the tripartite model as a researcher, practitioner and advocate. A Professor of Psychology and Education at Columbia University Teacher College in New York, she lectures around the world, is a past Senior Research Scientist and has extensive clinical experience treating couples, families and children. At the United Nations, she holds the prestigious appointment as Advisor to the Mission of the Republic of Sierra Leone to the UN; is an NGO Representative of the International Association of Applied Psychology and World Council for Psychotherapy for decades; co-organizes events, moderates and speaks at innumerable UN events; and led successful campaigns partnering with governments to secure the inclusion of mental health and well-being in the UN Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development on partnership with the Ambassador of Palau, co-founded the UN Group of Friends of Mental Health and Wellbeing, as well as noted in the new Global Digital Compact, and led a campaign to support the adoption of the UN General Assembly Resolution on Mental Health and Psychosocial Support sponsored by Mexico. Notably, she is also Policy Advisor to the Ambassador of Sierra Leone to the United States, and was awarded as a Grand Commander of the Order of the Rokel by President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone.

 

She has conducted original psychosocial training and resilience workshops worldwide, including after disasters in Haiti, Japan, China, Sri Lanka, Sint Maarten, Australia, Iran, and others, and currently for Ukraine, for which she also co-writes and performs music anthems, e.g., for recovery from 9/11, the Japan tsunami, Ebola in Sierra Leone, school shootings, Middle East terrorism, and during COVID-19., and in support of which she co-founded the Global Kids Connect. An avid advocate on behalf of mental health and well-being as well as the rights of women and girls, she has co-developed a Girl’s Empowerment Camp in Africa, conducted workshops for youth worldwide including for World Children’s Day in Malaysia, and presented many events for the UN, e.g., the Commission on the Status of Women, World Interfaith Harmony Week, and the Science Technology and Innovation Forum. A board member of the United African Congress, she co-founded the “Health in Your Hands” platform to convene stakeholders to showcase health innovations to reach those furthest behind with little access to health and mental health care especially in remote communities, now part of the Health Innovation and Investment Exchange (HIEx). A member of the Global Leadership Council of the eMental Health International Collaborative (eMHIC) and Fellow of the American Psychological Association, she co-wrote the first policy on mental health and climate change for the American Public Health Association and is a consultant for the IAAP Global Task Force on Terrorism and Peacebuilding.

 

An award-winning journalist, she has been a television feature reporter and talk show host, and host of a top-rated advice call-in radio show popular for youth and is called on to comment on news worldwide. She has been a columnist for many print outlets from the Singapore Straits Times and the South China Morning Post to the New York Daily News, and currently for Black Star newspaper. The author of many books and professional articles on interpersonal relationships and international issues including about disaster, environmental protection, epidemics, women around the world, grassroots peacebuilding in the Middle East, and migration, her latest volume is a comprehensive overview on “Resilient Health: Leveraging Technology and Social Innovations to Transform Healthcare for COVID-19 Recovery and Beyond” with 105 chapters from experts worldwide including from Dr. Anil Thapliyal about the eMHIC.
