Niki Legge, Canada

Director, Mental Health and Addictions, Department of Health and Community Services (with special mention to the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador)

Leadership Excellence International Award 2020

Referees for Niki told us that you could not find a more worthy candidate. She has extraordinary and unwavering dedication and passion for the advancement of mental health services, in particular eMental Health, within our systems both locally, nationally and globally.

When eMental Health was frowned upon by clinicians and individuals alike, Niki pushed through the barriers and implemented an approach that is second to none. The impact of her efforts include a significant reduction in wait times for services through the use and integration of eMental Health tools.

Niki was described as someone who has tirelessly championed not only eMental Health, but also the critical importance of lived experience in this new and exciting area of mental health. She is described as a strong team player whose leadership style is one of humility and grace.

Niki has transitioned from a Social Worker, to Provincial Mental Health Consultant, to the lead on Recovery and eMental Health and now as the Director of Mental Health and Addictions provincially.

The Government she works for also deserves acknowledgement and recognition for paving the way with their strategic foresight and very progressive stance on eMental health since 2011. Without this strong foundation laid by the Newfoundland and Labrador government and her forward thinking leadership, eMental Health would not have reached the level of importance and practical implementation that it has.

Our meritorious recipient is highly worthy of this award and we join her referees in congratulating her whole-heartedly.
