Founder, Stepped Care 2.0
Leadership Excellence International Award 2021
Peter’s referees told us that you really could not find a more worthy award winner. He is highly regarded in Canada and internationally as an innovative and thought-provoking leader who has made significant contributions to the academic literature, conceptual frameworks and theory, and programs that address access issues within Canada and abroad.
One of his programmes has, quite simply, been transformative for the people of Canada. Over a two-year period, Peter’s thought-leadership and people-leadership directly contributed to the reduction of wait times to access mental health services within the province of Newfoundland and Labrador by 68 percent. The success of this work has led to the Mental Health Commission of Canada continuing to partner with him to scale his Stepped Care 2.0 solution across additional jurisdictions within Canada. This person-centred solution truly delivers evidence-based programming aligned with recovery principles. Importantly, Stepped Care 2.0 improves equitable access to a variety of wellness and mental health resources. Its framework enables the appropriate distribution of timely and accessible care, including the flexibility to meet people’s wide-ranging needs and preferences. In doing so, the model aims to find the right balance between wellness promotion, prevention, treatment intensity, and risk management.
More recently, our worthy recipient has been at the forefront of supporting Canadians’ mental health and wellbeing during the pandemic. Funded by the Government of Canada, Peter has worked collaboratively to create the Wellness Together Canada portal. With its foundation in Stepped Care 2.0, this portal provides all Canadians with online wellbeing information, the ability to practice skills through online courses and apps, as well as the opportunity to connect with peers and or counsellors. Consistent with the platform in Newfoundland, users determine what they need and when they need it, and wellbeing is viewed as a journey, not a destination. What has been accomplished with the Wellness Together Canada platform in such a short period is truly exceptional.
Peter is a true leader with extraordinary and unwavering dedication to the advancement of mental health services, in particular eMental Health, within systems both locally, nationally and globally.
We join his referees in thanking him for his tireless efforts and congratulating him wholeheartedly.
